The Role of Medical Information Management

Under the pressing need to offer better healthcare services at lower costs, today, healthcare service provider organizations have recognized the need for effective medical information management via a powerful IT system. As a result and given the advancement in Information Technology, healthcare service providers ceased to limit the use of computers to accounting and administration. They introduced the concept of "Electronic Patient Record" and the computerized storage of medical information. In this way, medical data started to be stored in the IT system aiming at their easy retrieval at any time.

However recent technological developments as well as the increasing needs of healthcare providers demanded the upgrade of the "Electronic Patient Record" from a simple system for storing medical data to an advanced, structured system that would allow the holistic management of medical information via the computer. Multimedia technology made possible the storage of actual medical readings into the computer via connection with medical equipment. In parallel, state of the art software tools made feasible the development of applications with capabilities of high flexibility and ease in the management of medical data via the correlation of data, the issue of diachronic diagrams, the issue of quality indicators, etc.

Thus, the "Electronic Patient Record" was renamed to "Multimedia Health Record" and started being used, not sporadically, but continuously for the continuous monitoring of patients' health.

Latest IT developments dictate the use of the Multimedia Health Record as a backbone in medical services management as well as a common reference point for teams of health professionals from multiple disciplines or even at remote locations. However, a Multimedia Health Record is not adequate to handle the complexity of current operations of healthcare service provider organizations along with the pressing need to offer more and better services, to more beneficiaries, at lower costs, unless:

  • it is characterized by extremely organized structure so as to handle with equal effectiveness actual medical readings, acquired from medical devices, diagnoses, care plans, prescriptions, etc as well as administrative and financial data

  • it is coupled with powerful information management capabilities,

  • it offers high flexibility to fit particular Business Models

  • it ensures utmost patient data security and integrity of recorded care actions.

The aMedLine fit

The aMedLine software for Healthcare Service Provision Management does have a powerful Multimedia Health Record (MHR). This Record though, serves as a basis for offering extremely advanced capabilities of medical and administrative information management, flexibility to fit into any business model, high data security and, finally, expandability to address future needs. The MHR of the aMedLine system automatically and online acquires real medical data in the form of biosignals, images, video, sound, values, etc directly from medical devices. The real data constitute part of the patient history and are accessible and fully exploitable, at any time, by authorized parties in the organization.

It should be noted, though, that the MHR integrates all medical information recorded by the doctor, real medical readings and administrative data in a highly structured manner. Thus, all data, including actual medical readings, are fully measurable, comparable as well as exploitable from the organization's medical personnel.

Perhaps the most important advantage of aMedLine software is the endless flexibility that it offers to all users for all system parameters, ranging from diagnoses and treatment plans to users' access and modification rights to patient files. Τhe software allows to scientific personnel of each organization to define themselves very easily all parameters connected with medical work, adapting thus perfectly the system to the business model of each organization and enhancing each organization's policy.

  • For example, the scientific personnel may optimize the procedure of monitoring of each patient's health through automatic correlations between actual medical data, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, etc in a way predefined by scientific doctors themselves for each patient or medical condition.

In the same way and beyond medical data management, the application offers advanced capabilities of management of financial and administrative data:

  • The application enables managers of the organization to issue statistical reports on performance and quality indicators, putting them in a position to accurately evaluate operations and make right strategic decisions.

  • In the same way, the scientific personnel can issue clinical and epidemiological reports.

Finally, the technological infrastructure of the application offers ultimate data security and allows future expansion to more services like home care and telemedicine.
